METALPHOTO® & PHOTOSENSITIVE ANODIZED ALUMINIUM

Metalphoto®: The World’s Most Durable Identification

When a standard label fails, the result is lost traceability and non-compliance. For applications that demand absolute permanence, Graphie offers Metalphoto® processing. This is not ink on metal; it is a photographic image embedded inside the metal itself.

Based in La Pocatière, Graphie is one of the few integrated manufacturers capable of processing this specialized material. We serve the defense, marine, and heavy transportation sectors where identification plates must withstand extreme conditions for 20+ years without fading or delaminating.

The Science: Sub-Surface Imaging in Porous Aluminum

The secret to Metalphoto’s longevity lies in its unique material composition: Photosensitive Anodized Aluminum.

  1. Porous Structure: The aluminum sheet has an anodized layer that is left unsealed (porous), containing silver halide crystals (similar to photographic film).

  2. Exposure: We expose your image (text, barcodes, schematics) onto the plate using light.

  3. Sealing: The plate is chemically sealed. This closes the anodic pores, trapping the image under a sapphire-hard anodic layer.

The Result: The image is essentially "buried" inside the metal. It cannot be scratched off because it is part of the aluminum substrate itself.

Certified for Harsh Environments and Military Use

Metalphoto is the industry standard for Mil-Spec identification. It is one of the few materials specified by the US Department of Defense for permanent marking.

  • Extreme Durability: It resists saltwater corrosion, intense UV radiation (sunlight), extreme heat (up to 650°F+), and abrasion.

  • Chemical Resistance: It is impervious to hydraulic fluids, diesel fuel, solvents, and industrial cleaners.

  • Certifications: Our process meets key military specifications including MIL-STD-130 (UID Marking), MIL-DTL-15024, and GG-P-455.

Ano-Screen and High-Resolution Graphics

In addition to standard photographic exposure, we utilize Ano-Screen techniques for specific volume applications. By screening specialized inks directly into the open pores of the anodized aluminum before sealing, we combine the vibrant color capabilities of screen printing with the sub-surface durability of anodizing.

This allows for:

  • Photographic Resolution: We can reproduce intricate machine diagrams, wiring schematics, and maps with incredible detail (over 1000 dpi).

  • Variable Data: Perfect for high-density barcodes and UID unique identifiers that must remain scannable after decades in the field.

Integrated Fabrication

Unlike a print shop that only processes the image, Graphie manufactures the complete tag.

  • Machining & Punching: We use our CNC machining and punching capabilities to cut the Metalphoto sheets to your exact shape, including internal cutouts for switches or dials.

  • Adhesive & Assembly: We can apply high-strength 3M industrial adhesives or mechanically assemble the plates onto the metal chassis we fabricate for you.
